Introduction

Background and Purpose of Establishment

In 2006, the Taiwanese government identified six strategic life technology industries: nanotechnology, flexible electronics, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), intelligent robotics, intelligent vehicles, and smart living spaces. From that year through 2010, the government planned to invest NT$20 billion in industries related to the application of nanotechnology in everyday life—making it the largest budget allocation among the six strategic technology sectors.

The development of nanotechnology has led to the discovery of many novel physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials. Due to these unique characteristics, nanomaterials can interact with biomolecules to enable the development of innovative detection technologies. These technologies have potential applications in biomedical testing, industrial inspection, food safety, environmental monitoring, agricultural diagnostics, and biochemical defense.

In alignment with the government’s science and technology development policies, National Chung Cheng University aims to support the establishment of domestic capabilities in nano-biosensing technologies and to enhance Taiwan’s global competitiveness in this field. To this end, the university proposes the establishment of a Nano-Biosensing Technology Research Center under the Office of Research and Development. The center’s mission is to integrate the manpower and resources of various departments within the university, fostering collaboration and innovation. Through the formation of a distinctive and outstanding research team, the center will assist industries in rapidly applying micro- and nano-scale structural design, fabrication capabilities, and nanomaterial manipulation to develop new sensing technologies for life science applications, thereby enhancing the international competitiveness of Taiwan’s related industries.

Scope of Work

  1. Establish interdisciplinary research and education in nano-biosensing technology within the university.

  2. Secure externally funded projects related to research, education, and outreach in nano-biosensing technology.

  3. Develop and maintain core facilities for nano-biosensing technology research.

  4. Cultivate professionals and talents in the field of nano-biosensing technology.

  5. Provide consultation services to assist domestic industries in the development of nano-biosensing technologies.

  6. Promote inter-university exchange and collaboration in nano-biosensing technology.
